A stimulus reinforcement is feedback that enhances or intensifies a reaction to a stimulus. It creates a conditioned reflex. An association even can start out neutral, for example, ringing a bell and salivating. In a famous series of experiments by Dr. Ivan Pavlov around the turn of the 18th Century, dogs drooled when food was given them and a bell rung at the same time. After awhile the dogs would drool just at the sound of the bell. The sound of the bell started out neutral in relation to stimulating saliva but became a stimulus to salivation by creating a physiological association in the dogs with the bell sound and food, and then repeatedly reinforcing this association.

reinforcement is a stimulus which follows and is contigent upon a behaviour and increases the probability of a behaviour
You may have another discipline in mind. In conditioning studies under the general heading of operant psychology, a reinforcer is anything that can be associated with a specific behavior that will cause that specific behavior to increase in frequency. There are generally two kinds of reinforcement, positive and negative. Considering the definition above would you conclude that negative reinforcement is identical to punishment? If you consider punishment following an undesired behavior, does this in fact lead to an increased occurance of another specific behavior? No, it does not. Effective punishment will reduce the frequency of a specific behavior, but it does not reinforce any particular behaviors. Food pellets for a hungry rat is an example of a positive reinforcer, for obvious reasons. A rat in a lever box can be trained quickly and easily to press a lever with amazing vigor in order to get a pellet now and then. Negative reinforcement would look more like this. And please think of these things being done within humane limits. You have a rat in a lever box, and you deliver an electric shock to the floor of the box so that the experience is noxious and not harmful. When the rat presses the lever, you turn off the shock. You can see that this use of noxious stimulation serves to increase the frquency of a specific behavior.

What is gradual reinforcement?

Reinforcement refers to enhancement of behavior or enhancement of memory. The gradual reinforcement thus means a step by step or slow enhancement of memory.

How are positive and negative reinforcement similar and how are they different?

Positive reinforcement is when you reward someone (person, child, pet, etc.) when they do what you want them to, and you ignore them when they do what you don't want them to do. Negative reinforcement, I believe, is when you punish someone for doing what you don't want them to do. As far as their effectiveness, it seems that a combination of both is good. Positive reinforcement is essential, and negative reinforcement helps to round it out. It is, however, important to be careful with negative reinforcement because if you put too much attention on someone while trying to enact the punishment (IE, time out), then, subconsciously, they may enjoy even the negative attention and thus you will have a counterproductive effect.

What is positive reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement is when you reward a behavior to encourage it. Negative reinforcement is when you discourage an unwanted behavior. It is NOT when you add or subtract a consequence from a situation. hope this helped.... StarGaizer42 :) *Edit I edit this as you are incorrect with Negative reinforcement StarGaizer42, Negative Reinforcement IS when you remove a stimulus or consequence to encourage good behavior. i.e. If you do this now(good thing), you wont have to do that later (bad thing) Cheers Baker718 Edit*
