Left and right are determined while sitting in the front seat, so left is drivers side on a USA car.
I have a 98' Cavalier and you must pry and pop a clip off of the rod sticking out of the passenger side seat where the hinge bracket is. Once the clip is removed (be careful it is only plastic)the back oof the seat can be slid about 1/2 an inch over towards the passenger side, causing the rod on the opposite side of the seat to be released from it's hinge bracket. Then simply lift the back part of the seat on the drivers side about 1 inch ( with the seat folded forward all the way)and jiggle very slightly as you pull outwards, towards the drivers side. That should do it. Hope it's helpful to you! Answer I have a 98' Cavalier and you must pry and pop a clip off of the rod sticking out of the passenger side seat where the hinge bracket is. Linkage is on the drivers side of trany (about under drivers seat area). May not be adjustable, but if it is then look there for a adjustment rod
Adjusting the seat height. Pull the small tab and a rod will come out intentionally

Sometimes I have found a couple Virago's where the Seat ISN'T held down by bolts at all but a latch kinda like a latch to a cars hood. Remove the Left side cover. In the Middle of the seat, where the rider and passenger point is; there is two metal pieces protruding downward. Feel for the one in the back. Push it forward. This latch is attached to a rod that goes to the other side so by rotating the left side it also unlatches the right side. I hope this helps someone else!
drivers side above the shifting rod.
In the cargo area , behind the removable plastic panel on the drivers side Also , your lug wrench is held in place by clips on the back side of the plastic panel and the two metal rod extensions for the jack are behind the rear seat under the carpeted panel in the floor
''That protruding metal rod could impale someone''
On a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer : The tire jack and lug nut wrench are in the cargo area , on the drivers side , behind a removable plastic panel by the liftgate The ( 2 ) rod sections used for putting the jack in position ( 1 section is used to lower the spare tire ) can be found just behind the rear seat ( go around to the passenger side and tip the seat back forward , lift the carpeted panel and you will see the ( 2 ) rod sections held in place with clips
under the rear fender is a release for the seat.
