That this could have been a major victory for the Confederacy,but with so many casualties on both sides,the generals on each side began to realize that the war would not be over as quickly as they thought it would.

(This doesn't mean I'm a "know-it-all" person,it just means that I'm educated)

The death of the Confederate commander, Sidney Johnston, regarded as the best General in the South.

It was a dramatic contest, where Grant was caught off-guard, and several people claimed that they had saved his bacon - the start of some longstanding feuds.

But it marked the end of Confederate hopes of winning the war in the West, and it forged an important partnership between Grant and Sherman.
