The correct term is socialized medicine. Medical care is provided to all citizens by the government and paid for by tax money. Socialized medicine is a system designed to provide an entire population with complete medical care through government regularization and subsidization of medical and health services. It does not leave anyone out of receiving healthcare because they cannot afford to pay for it as often happens in the United States where private healthcare costs have risen sharply in the last few years.
Socialized medicine exists in at least 34 countries including Canada, Great Britain, Spain, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Austria, Sweden, Finland and Israel.
The US Veteran's Administration is finder and operated by the government much the same as a socialized medicine system. Doctors are paid by the government and veteran's and military hospitals are operated by the government.
