Harriet Tubman's traits were that she was brave, smart, courageous, religious, heroic, and kind person.she led the slaves in Maryland out of slavery and into freedom, about 500 slaves. she was born in 1820, Dorchester country, Maryland. died march 10th 1913 Auburn New York age 91. she was best known as the best conductor in the ''Underground Railroad''. Married John Tubman, a free slave in 1844, but remained a slave herself until her escape in 1849. She died from pnuemonia, in a nursing home. she help free black slaves from the whites, and so many blacks were thankful to her. also it was wrong for the whites to ''owns'' black, which is why they created laws and rights for that kind of thing.
Harriet Tubman was instrumental in smuggling black American slaves up north. Many had to go all the way to Canada since the U.S. Federal Government passed the Fugitive Slave Act, which could deport slaves from free states back to their masters. Tubman was the Moses of black slaves in the United States.
In 1849 she fled Maryland leaving her free husband of 5 years and her parents, sisters, and brothers. She returned to the south 19 times to lead her family and others to freedom. There was a reward for her capture that was 40,000 dollars. She never lost a fugitive or allowed one to turn back. Two things kept her going; the pistol she carried and her faith in God. She collaborated with John Brown in 1858 in planning his raid on Harper's Ferry. They met in Canada where she told him all she knew of the east coast Underground Railroad. She also promised to give aid to him. He wanted her to come on the raid and she planned on being there but became ill and could not take part. In the civil war she was a nurse, scout, and spy. For more than 3 years she nursed the sick and wounded in FLA. After the war she returned to Auburn NY and turned her home into the Home for the Indigent and Aged Negroes. She had money problems and financed her home with selling copies of her book about her life and giving speeches. She died in 1913.
