You can't. Apple never released a firmware higher than 3.1.3 for the iPod 1G. However, If you want to upgrade to 3.1.3, all you have to do is download the firmware, (just google ipod firmware and it should be the first link) then connect your iPod to iTunes and then hold down shift (or option if you are on a mac) and left lick on update. If that doesn't work, then try doing the same thing, but click restore.
