In 1871 Jan Leonard Moortgat founded the brewery. Business was booming by 1900, but during the first world war production declined.There was an exchange of products with England, English beers were popular in Belgium. After the war, J L Moortgat decided to produce an ale similar to the English and experimented until 1923 when a English type of ale was produced. A tasting session for local notable Belgians was arranged, the shoemaker was impressed and pronounced that this new ale was a real Duvel (devil) ale. The new ale was marketed under this name
