It held more ammunition per clip than most of the weapons used by the opposing forces in the Second World War, and it was self loading, which made for quicker follow up shots, or quicker times to engage a second target, as the firer didn't have to manually engage the bolt to load the next round. It also had a better sight picture with the peep sights. The Garand was also as accurate as any bolt action rifle out to 850 yards (though combat typically took place only out to 200 yards and under) the M1 held every advantage over the enemy's bolt action rifles in the war.
