This was the campaign to take control of the Mediterranean Sea by gaining control of the ports and countries that border it. In 1939 and 1940, the conflicts began in the Mediterranean area by advances of Italy and Germany into countries such as Lybia and Yugoslavia and Greece. This was their attempt to control the Mediterranean Sea. Benito Mussolini referred to the Mediterranean Sea as Our Sea. The British began fighting the Germans in North African in 1941. Eventually, the Americans joined them on North Africa in late 1942 and helped push out the Germans. During this time, their Navies took control of the sea and began to move into eastern Mediterranean around Greece and the Suez Canal. After the fall of Sicily and forcing the Germans out of Greece, the Allies could begin to move ground troops into Italy and eastern Europe.
