The Method of Doubt employed by Descartes requires the individual to place everything he thinks he believes under a close scrutiny. Anything that cannot be proved beyond the slightest shadow of a doubt, Descartes rejects out of hand. Even so simple a perception as holding a piece of paper in your hand, Descartes finds too untrustworthy on which to base his system of philosophy. Can you truly be certain you aren't dreaming, he asks? Or, if not dreaming, what if you were mad, and while you were quite certain within your own mind that you held a piece of paper in your hand, the reality could be nothing of the sort. In this manner, Descartes systematically applies his doubts to every more basic layer of consciousness until all that he is left with is his conviction that if he can doubt, then there must be something that is doing that doubting. He must exist, if he can doubt, although it is unclear as of yet what form that existence may take.
It's really difficult for a person to try to separate themselves from their own beliefs when they are considering things, and the Method of Doubt makes it easier. He forces himself to doubt everything he thinks is true, so that whatever is left that cannot be called into question must be true. The method is important, since what he is trying to do is identify the things that he can know for sure are true.
They both contributed to the Scientific method. Francis Bacon did this to make sure that they did not having false thoughts/teachings. Descartes said to gain knowledge to follow those steps. They helped create a new approach to science. Over time, people started calling this new approach the scientific method.

For me, meditation is the very center of religion. The word religion means for me scripture, ritual, rites of passage, tradition, and so forth. Meditation leads to a direct contact with the divine. Religion without meditation is like a river without water. Dry. Desolate. Empty of life.

i doubt it
Ethics plays no direct role in Descartes's MEDITATIONS ON FIRST PHILOSOPHY; first philosophy is about ontology and epistemology, not ethics. However, Descartes states in his letter of dedication that his motivation is to provide incentive for people to live better because "in this life there are often more rewards for vices than for virtues" [Cress translation]. .
