Adold Hitler's "Final Solution", as he called it, to the problems he invented and perceived as all the fault of the Jews.
It aimed to wipe out the Jews, along with gyspies and homosexuals, by mass-murder on an industrial scale in the extermination camps such as Treblinka and Birkenau.
After being rounded up into various ghettos in the early stages of the National Socialist's power, the victims were transported by the train-load to concentration camps where many were used as slaves until no longer fit for work, then along with the rest, they were gassed and their bodies cremated, without ceremony.
In some camps they were used in very cruel experiments by doctors with swastika arm-bands on their white coats. One such set of experiments involved immersion in freezing cold water, to "help" the Luftwaffe understand better the effects of being shot down over the North Sea.
The extermination camps were simply killing-machines, designed by Albert Speer, Hitler's favoured architect who also designed what would have been a "museum" to a "vanished race" - the Jews.
Worls War Two stopped this genocide, though not soon enough to save over 6 million victims, and the full nature of what was really happening was not fully realised until the Allies invaded Europe and found the concentration camps.
The War originally had been against Hitler's invasions - he wanted an empire he called "The Third Reich", under military Dictatorship.
The term "Holocaust" was applied after the War, by surviving Jews, not by the Nazis.

Hitler believed that the German race was superior to all other people. He also believed that Jews and Communists were the cause of Germany's problems. As a result, when he took power, he wanted to rid Germany, and most of Europe, of the Jews, but he did not know what to do with all of them. As a result, he told his people, the Nazis, to get rid of them.
