The Maddox (DD731) was an Allen Sumner class WWII USN destroyer that engaged North Vietnamese Navy torpedo boats in the Tonkin Gulf on 02 August 1964. A two part "Tonkin Gulf Incident."
North Vietnamese Naval units (135th Torpedo Boat Squadron) attacked the US destroyer USS Maddox on 02 August 1964; then another incident occurred on 04 August 1964 (involving the USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy). That was the rationale.
The destroyer Maddox was alone when she engaged 3 North Viet Navy torpedo boats from their 135th Torpedo Boat squadron on 02 August 1964. Maddox was with the destroyer USS Turner Joy on 04 August 1964 in the Gulf when they engaged "Tonkin Ghosts" (radar ghosts in the Tonkin Gulf).
Conventional forces built up in about March 1965. The result of a NVN (P4) Motor Torpedo Boat attack on the (destroyer) USS Maddox on 02 August 1964, and an alleged attack on 04 August 1964 against the destroyers USS Maddox & Turner Joy in the Gulf of Tonkin. The first attack was an actual sea battle, the Maddox did engage the torpedo boats with her 5 inch guns, and the boats did launch torpedoes at the Maddox. The second attack is alleged; although the Turner Joy DID fire hundreds of 5 inch shells at her radar directed targets.
1. North Vietnam readily admits to the naval engagement between their 135th Torpedo Squadron and the Destroyer USS Maddox on 02 August 1964. 2. North Vietnam denies fighting the destroyers USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy on 04 August 1964. As a matter of "trivia" fact: Those actual 3 NVN torpedo boats that attacked Maddox on 02 August 1964 (in which one was claimed sunk) & and were allegedly possibly used again on the 4th of August 1964 (Boats T-333, T-336, and T-339) were indeed actually sunk on or about 1/2 July 1966 by US jets from the carriers USS Constellation & Hancock.
