Generally 10% to 15%, depending on the year. The 2009 edition of Peterson's Private Secondary Schools reports that for fall 2007, 447 students applied and 63 were accepted (14.1%). This appears to make Roxbury Latin the most selective private secondary school in the country. Peterson's reports the following acceptance rates during the same year at other elite private schools: Phillips Andover (19.7%), Phillips Exeter (22.0%), Groton (19.6%), Noble and Greenough (20%). Another indication of a school's desirability is its yield (the percentage of accepted students who actually enroll). Here again, Roxbury Latin stands head and shoulders above all other schools. Its yield for the fall of 2007 was a phenomenal 91% (indeed, in one recent year, Roxbury Latin had the unheard of yield of 100%). To put these figures in context, in the same year that Roxbury Latin had a 91% yield, Andover was a distant second at 73.8%, followed by Exeter (68.7%), Nobles (60%), and Groton (56.1%). To put Roxbury Latin's yield in further context, Harvard's yield for college freshmen--which is by far the highest among all major U.S universities--hovers around 80%. Roxbury Latin is truly in a class by itself when it comes to selectivity and desirability among secondary schools.
Roxbury Latin School was created in 1645.
