Most Montana's have a rear air suspension in them (air shocks). The compressor is there to adjust the rear height of the vehicle depending to weight in the van.

You can find and air compressor for your 1997 Pontiac Grand Am at most auto-parts stores. The air compressor will connect to any of your auxiliary power sources.
Drain the freon from the Montana into a reclaiming machine. Remove the compressors drive belt. Disconnect the freon lines from the compressor. Unbolt the compressor and remove it. Bolt the new compressor into place, then connect the lines using new gaskets. Hook the belt back up. Pull a vacuum on the system, then fill with freon.

You can find the air conditioning drain tube for your 1997 Pontiac Firebird on the bottom of the air conditioner compressor. The drain tube will be near the back of the air conditioner compressor.
There are two ports on the air conditioner compressor on a Montana. Attach the refrigerant to the lower port and recharge the system.

Google Pontiac boneville ac compressor bypass pulley. There are a few places that sell a replacement pulley that goes in the spot of the compressor that allows use of the original serpentine belt.
