I believe that the ambiguity in the Demon Lover by Elizabeth Bowen is at the end where she gets into the cab. Bowen says that the woman looks through the glass separating the driver from the passenger and starts screaming. Now we believe the driver is her lost lover but in reality the driver could have been just one ugly person.
