The exact area or boundaries are not mentioned in the Declaration, but the 13 colonies which declared indepence were New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The Declaration included two entire present-day states (Maine and West Virginia) which were then parts of other states. Several present-day states just west of the original states were more or less included: Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee. Some people hoped and wished that Florida, Canada, Bahamas, Bermuda and other nearby possessions would be somehow included, but that did not happen.
