It depends on the species. The Crested Bellbird, also known as the Crested thrush (Scientific name Oreoica gutturalis), is found almost throughout mainland Australia, in habitats ranging from eucalyptus bushland and acacia scrublands to spinifex and saltbush plains or dunes.

Bell miners, which are not true bellbirds, are found in thick eucalyptus bushland, where they tend to push out many other species.

There is also one species of bellbird in New Zealand (Anthornis melanura), which is also known by its Māori names Korimako or Makomako. It is found in native forests throughout both the North and South Islands.
