It was during the period of the 1890s that the US foreign policy became influenced by imperialism. During that decade, the US became the most important industrial power in the world. That meant we had to find markets and areas to obtain raw materials. Business was also looking at other areas in the world as potential customers for our products. Industry boomed in the US and employment increased. The US Military, especially the Navy, was growing and expanding in other areas of the world where we had not had the ability to go in force before. The war with Spain and the presidency of T. Roosevelt also made the US a major economic, military, and imperialistic power. With due respect to the previous poster, and the accuracy of his answer, the question is framed in the present tense. US imperialism did not end in the 1890's. Reagan's adventures in South and Central America during the 1980's, and the recent invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan are clear examples of US imperialism, and to call it anything else is intellectually dishonest. It is rarely mentioned in the media that the US has already built a very large military base in Afghanistan, close to the Iranian border. It's true reasons for invading Iraq are obvious to any reasonable person. The United States is trying to conquer the Middle East, pure and simple. What are the benefits for the US people? It may quench the thirst for oil in the short term, and preserve jobs in the military industrial complex, but the aggressive behaviour of the US is a great danger to all people, not just US citizens. The United States is extending its imperialism beyond our planet, and wants ownership of space (the Bush administration stated that explicitly). It is no secret that they are not talking about defense against a first strike nuclear missile. That is beyond the present technology, but it is possible (but in no way reliable) to shoot down an incoming retaliatory missile. Therefore, the militarization of space is about offense, not defense. Putting nuclear weapons in space has also been discussed, and I fail to see how this insanity could benefit US citizens, or anyone else.

What was not a reason for US imperialism?

There is no reason for imperialism other than greed and fear. Since the US never really had to fear any country after the War of 1812 I would have to say fear was not a reason for imperialism!
