That depends on what you consider 'high quality'. Do you value beauty, strength, suppleness, ability to last a long time, ability to produce best heat in a fire? Different woods for different purposes.

The best wood depends on what you're going to do with it. If you want to build a home out of it, yellow pine or Douglas fir are best--they're strong and reasonably priced. If you want to build drums out of it, maple has become the timber of choice.
My favorite wood? Cherry. It's easy to work, pretty, strong enough for the stuff I want to make, not outrageously expensive, and smells REALLY good when you turn it. It also gets darker and prettier the longer you have it.
