I always liked LTD , low end epiphones aren't bad as of 2013 , Agile makes some affordable ones for under $300.
play something and see if you like it. Upgrade the guitar tuners to Grover or something better like Schaller , sperzel , gotoh..ect and just keep playing. I'd spend at least $150 (used) or $300 new. Don't worry about getting used Guitars , I mean if it's your first why take a huge risk getting a $300 guitar just to only find out a week later that it isn't what you want to do. The good thing is you can rent guitars.
