If the carbohydrate is a 'bad' sort, a diabetic may feel shaky and eat a chocolate bar, which makes them feel better quickly. ?This effect is very temporary. In this case, the pancreas secretes too much insulin, as it counters the effects of the 'quick fix sugar' rush, so the diabetic very quickly feels shaky again and feels the need to reach for another carbohydrate rich snack to ward it off. ?This boom-and-bust cycle is harmful and dangerous.


Carbohydrates are not all the same. ?There are 'good' ones and 'bad' ones. ?The good ones take a long time to digest, so they keep the blood sugar level constant ?There is a lot of information available on the internet about the different carbohydrates and how they can help everyone - not just diabetics - feel a lot healthier. ?Search for 'GI Index'


Also, a diabetic needs to have frequent, regular meals, although the portion size will have to be smaller if weight gain is to be avoided. ?Having frequent healthy snacks helps prevent the damaging boom-and-bust cycle. ?A good example of a mid morning snack would be an apple or some fat free yoghurt, a crispbread with low fat cheese spread or a handful of nuts.

Adjusting what you eat is important. More fruits and vegetables, more fish and chicken. No sodas! Diet sodas have less sugar but way too much sodium. More home cooked meals so you can control what goes in your food. Basically what it amounts to is diabetics are forced to have a diet that everyone should have. There is tons of information out there and sadly much of it is garbage. Here's the huge key - do what works for you. That means lots of trial and error. It is work, but it can be interesting. DON'T get discouraged! It takes time to get it all balanced out.

The best diet for those who have diabetes is a low in sugar meal. Also staying away from carbohydrates starches like potatoes and some fruits can be a good diet for people with diabetes.

This will depend if you are a Type I or Type II diabetic, but there is some overlap as well. Generally avoiding sugary carbs will let you maintain proper insulin levels.
