If your budget can handle it, a Mac Mini is quite a nice desktop computer for simple home usage. The lowest grade Mini would probably suffice, especially if you aren't planning on doing any gaming.
However if you are more of a PC user, I would suggest the Dell XPS series. The Studio XPS 8100 is the lowest in terms of price but would likely suit a non-professional home user just fine.

If you're a student (in college or high school), you might consider a MacBook Pro, which is a reliable laptop.
Also consider a mac if you are willing to pay more for good performance.
Toshiba satellite laptops are good all around performers, and come at a good price.
Lenovo is pretty good for the low cost of its laptops.
Personally, I would suggest you look at Consumer Reportsbefore making a choice; their ratings are unbiased and take price into account.
