Recent research has shown that cognitive behavior therapy can be more effective than medication in controlling insomnia. In this therapy, patients are taught improved sleep habits and relieved of counter-productive assumptions about sleep.

Non-benzodiazepine prescription drugs, including Ambien and Lunesta,have a cleaner side effect profile than the older benzodiazepines;however, there are controversies over whether these non-benzodiazepinedrugs are superior to benzodiazepines. These drugs appear to cause bothpsychological dependence and physical dependence, and can also cause the same memory and cognitive disturbances as the benzodiazepines along with morning sedation.

Melatoninhas proved effective for some insomniacs in regulating the sleep/wakingcycle, but lacks definitive data regarding efficacy in the treatment ofinsomnia.

Melatonin agonists, including Ramelteon (Rozerem),seem to lack the potential for abuse and dependence. This class ofdrugs has a relatively mild side effect profile and lower likelihood ofcausing morning sedation.

The antihistamine diphenhydramineis widely used in nonprescription sleep aids, with a 50 mg recommendeddose mandated by the FDA. In the United Kingdom, Australia, NewZealand, South Africa, and other countries, a 50 to 100 mg recommendeddose is permitted. While it is available over the counter, theeffectiveness of these agents may decrease over time and the incidenceof next-day sedation is higher than for most of the newer prescriptiondrugs. Dependence does not seem to be an issue with this class of drugs.

Some antidepressants such as mirtazapine, trazodone and doxepin have a sedative effect, and are prescribed off label to treat insomnia. The major drawback of these drugs is that they have antihistaminergic, anticholinergic and antiadrenergic properties which can lead to many side effects. Some also alter sleep architecture.

Low doses of certain atypical antipsychotics such as quetiapine(Seroquel) are also prescribed for their sedative effect but the dangerof neurological and cognitive side effects make these drugs a poorchoice to treat insomnia.

Some insomniacs use herbs such as valerian, chamomile, lavender, hops, and passion-flower. Valerian has undergone the most studies and appears to be modestly effective. Cannabis indica has also been suggested as a very effective treatment for insomnia.

Alcohol may have sedative properties, but the REM sleep suppressing effects of the drug prevent restful, quality sleep. Middle-of-the-night awakenings due to polyuria or other effects from alcohol consumption are common, and hangovers can also lead to morning grogginess.

Insomnia may be a symptom of magnesium deficiency, or lower magnesium levels. A healthy diet containing magnesium, can help to improve sleep in individuals without an adequate intake of magnesium.

Some traditional remedies for insomnia have included drinking warmmilk before bedtime, taking a warm bath in the evening; exercisingvigorously for half an hour in the afternoon, eating a large lunch andthen having only a light evening meal at least three hours before bed,avoiding mentally stimulating activities in the evening hours, andmaking sure to get up early in the morning and to retire to bed at areasonable hour.

Pomegranatesare also believed to help insomniacs sleep. Other reports cite the useof an elixir of cider vinegar and honey but the evidence for this isonly anecdotal.

Using aromatherapy, including jasmine oil, lavender oil, Mahabhringaraj and other relaxing essential oils, may also help induce a state of restfulness. Horlicks is marketed as a sleeping aid.

Many believe that listening to slow paced music will help insomniacsfall asleep. This theory is being studied by professor Jedediah Fajmanat the University of Illinois.The more relaxed a person is, the greater the likelihood of gettinga good night's sleep. Relaxation techniques such as meditation havebeen shown to help people sleep. Such techniques can lower stresslevels from both the mind and body, which leads to a deeper, morerestful sleep1.

There are many things that can help fix insomnia. Most of them approach the problem indirectly; insomnia is more often a symptom of another issue, sometimes a mental health problem such as stress or depression. The first steps toward helping it are to create and maintain a sleep routine. Don't do anything energetic soon before bed, or consume anything that will keep you awake. Have a regular time to go to sleep and wake up, and stick to them no matter what. There are many other minor strategies that can make it easier or can eliminate small things that impede sleep. The other step is to see a doctor. They can determine whether it is a psychological (aforementioned stress, depression, etc.), medicinal (caused by something else you are taking), or simply insomnia on its own. They can then give you the appropriate aid, whether it is medication or recommendation to a specialist.

Go to bed and get up at regular times and sleep for long enough (7-8 hours for most people)

Do not make up for lost sleep by sleeping late or taking naps. You just make ti that much harder to sleep the next night when you do.

Have a comfortable bed and room.

Limit caffiene and avoid it after noon.

Avoid alcohol.

Avoid watching TV or computer or Video Games prior to bed. The light from the screen wakes you up.

Get outside and in the sunlight, preferably exercise, during the day.

You can use some over the counter sleep aides. They are usually antihistamines and not habit forming.

Avoid prolonged use of prescription sleep aids that are habit forming (Ambien, Lunesta, Xanax, Ativan, Restoril - anything that ends in -pam or -lam).

Get out of bed and do some quiet reading until drowsy if you are having trouble falling asleep.

Don't panic - most people who are well rested to begin with do fine on a few nights of a few hours sleep. Lying in bed worrying about how lousy you are going to feel the next day just makes it worse.
