Consult a doctor for the best course of action to take. A lifestyle change in addition to a good diet will definiatly contribute in the fight with weight-loss.
In general, assuming one is of average health with no disorders impacting weight; 1) Moderate exercise ever day, such as walking, bike riding, swimming, etc. 2) Several small, low calorie meals (concentrating on lean proteins and fresh vegetables and fruits) during the day as opposed to 3 larger meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner. 3) Education, will power, and persistence is the key to make the above mentioned possible. Also, you will to avoid sugary foods (sodas, cakes, cookies, candy) and foods high in saturated fats (full fat dairy, fatty meats, donuts, etc). Avoid highly processed foods filled with chemicals and preservatives. Study nutrition and get to know yourself. Be patient. Weight loss that comes all at once from a "crash diet" is more likely to return than weight lost in small increments over an extended period of time. View this "diet" as a permanent lifestyle change, not as a short-term fix to a weight problem.
A sound diet and plenty of exercise is the best way to lose weight. Don't eat too much, chew everything very well. Do not eat snacks or extra sugar.
Exercise regularly and try to get your heart beat to double for 20 or 30 minutes each day.
At 50, you can lose weight at a steady pace while greatly improving overall health. The following guidelines have allowed me to lose more than 100 pounds over 12 months, and look and feel 20 years younger! I've gone from a size 24/26 to size 12/14... and I'm still losing! My BP was 148/110 and is now 115/75! I'm 38 and 5'6. I never feel hungry, deprived, malnourished or even depressed. And, I have tons of energy!
1. (This is a big one) Only consume 1000mg or less of sodium per day (Sea Salt only). Excess sodium dehydrates the body, may cause water retention, and makes you crave sugar (the body's defense mechanism to balance high salt intake... the body can burn sugar and calories, but it can't burn sodium... that's why it's so deadly). It also throws my hormones out of whack (I become ravenously hungry if I consume too much salt).
2. Eliminate all refined sugars (i.e. cane sugar, honey, corn syrup, etc...). This stuff ages you prematurely, and is harder for your body to process (burn). It's not carbohydrates that are your enemy, refined sugar is. Again, this throws my hormones out of whack, making me crave more and more sweets.
3. Eat more whole foods (eliminate processed foods). If it was manufactured in a lab or factory (created by man vs God), chances are it isn't nutritious enough to sustain daily functions. Stick to raw/cooked vegetables (5-6 servings daily), fruits (4-6 servings daily), whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, fresh water fish, lean meats, soy, good mono-saturated fats (olive oil, flax seed oil, coconut oil, etc...) and moderate dairy.
4. Drink plenty of water. If you eat plenty of veggies and fruit, this becomes a moot point as your body will be naturally hydrated from plant substances. But, 5-8 8oz glasses should suffice.
5. Get 7-8 hours of "good" sleep each night. An uninterrupted deep sleep allows the body to recover from daily activities as well as enter into a "burn-fat" mode. Your bedroom should be completely devoted to sleeping (and sex). So remove the radio, computer, tv, etc... and turn this room into the ultimate sleep chamber.
6. Exercise (moderately). You don't have to kill yourself with exercise or become a gym rat... doing 30-45 minutes of any activity you enjoy 3-6 times a week is great for your body and mind. I like tennis and dancing. The point is just to get your body moving!
7. Buy a scale that weighs pounds, water %, and body fat. This will keep you from getting discouraged when and if you hit a plateau. Muscle weighs more than fat, and will show up as an increase in your water% even if the pounds don't decrease. You will know that a great biological change is occurring internally even when the pounds say there isn't.
8. Eliminate "other" beverages... sodas (diet and reg), sweetened drinks, fruit juice, etc... are empty calories and cause bloat. Plain coffee, green tea and water did it for me.
Think of your body as pure living energy. Every cell in your body is devoted to the support of some function, whether it be sleeping, eating, or breathing. Living energy requires living energy in order to be sustained. So the more living energy I consume (i.e. fruits, vegetables, etc...), and less processed stuff I don't consume, the stronger and healthier I feel.
The best way to lose weight and keep it off is a reduced-calorie diet combined with regular exercise. Try to find out how many calories you need each day to maintain your weight. Then, subtract that number by 500. That is how many calories you need each day for weight loss. Try to drink lots of water and make sure most of your calories come from healthy foods (lean meats, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains, etc.). Exercise may also help in helping the weight come off faster. First, talk to your doctor to see if he/she recommends you exercise. If not, don't worry! The weight will still come off, just at a slower rate. If so, start off slowly (10 minutes of exercise 3 days a week, then 15, then 20, etc.). It doesn't have to be really heavy exercise - just walking around the neighborhood is good for burning some calories.
