"Bushing" is an unfair lending practice in which a car dealer "pre-approves" a customer, sells him or her a car, but keeps the right to terminate the deal after consumer financing falls through (or is not even applied for). If it has taken more than a few days, the customer will have already become attached to the new car, forfeited the trade-in vehicle, and so on, putting the customer in a poor negotiating position on a new, high-interest financing "deal" that is the only way to keep the car.

Since passage of the "anti-bushing law" in the state of Washington, the original deal must be financed within three days or the sale is automatically void, and the car must be returned, giving the customer the chance to walk away from a worse financing charge.

In other words, the dealer has no incentive to stall the financing because there is risk of a fine, and possible damages. However, courts have held that if the dealer attempted to finance the loan at six banks (in good faith) and didn't notify the customer within 3 days that a higher financing term would be due, then it was not intentional "bushing" and there are no damages.
