After abolishing the slave trade itself, Britain actively patrolled the seas around West Africa to catch slave traders and fought to stop slavery and slave-trading in Africa itself, where it was ubiquitous and where almost 1/3rd of all Africans were held as slaves by other Africans. Present-day Nigeria was especially infamous for its slave-trading and its King Oba Kosoko refused to put an end to it. Britain then sent an expeditionary force that removed the king and replaced him with a more amenable successor.
