The main points would include the following: 1) To instill fear in the United States as to prevent further sanctions against the Japanese. 2) To destroy as many of the United States arsenal such as to not be able to prevent the Japanese aggrandizement of Asia and the Pacific. 3) To deter the US from engaging in interventions against the Japanese Empire.

The attack on Pearl Harbor (or Hawaii Operation, Operation Z, as it was called by the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters)[6] was an unannounced military strike conducted by the Japanese navy against the United States' naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941 (Hawaiian time, December 8 by Japan Standard Time), later resulting in the United States becoming militarily involved in World War II.

Most of the US pacific fleet was damaged or sunk, thousands were dead, and the U.S. was going to war. Luckily the pacific aircraft carriers were not in the harbor at the time, and Admiral Yamamoto cancelled the third wave, leaving the dry docks intact, meaning the damaged ships could be repaired quickly.
