While broadband has a total higher cost, dial-up has a proportionately higher cost. Most broadband connections have a transfer rate between 768 Kbps and 2 Mbps. Dial-up is capped at 56 Kbps. Most dial-up connections these days cost about $9.99, whereas broadband ranges from $29.99 to about $60.00. This means that broadband usually costs about $0.03 per kilobaud, whereas dial-up costs about $0.17 per kilobaud. Some services can cost less than $5 ($0.08 per kilobaud) a month, and can even be had for free in some areas, so this can tip the balance more in their favor if you are extremely indigent or not interested in higher speeds.
