Standing at the front of the engine, hood open, the numbering is as follows.
Passenger side from front to back: 1-2-3-4
Driver's side from front to back: 5-6-7-8
I believe this is also the standard numbering going back at least to the advent of the 289-302s, so that must put is at least into the 60s.

The # 2 coil / sparkplug / engine cylinder is on the passenger side of the engine , 2nd from the front of the engine
cylinder # 1 is the front cylinder on your straight 6
