Paterson's Curse, also known as Salvation Jane, Riverina bluebell, blue weed and purple bugloss is a weed because it was introduced to Australia from Europe in the mid 1800s, and quickly spread, and quickly took over agricultural lands and native plant regions. Paterson's Curse has a very high seed production of thousands of seeds per square metre, and seed longevity exceeding seven years. This, together with its ability to germinate at any time of year, depending on the conditions, makes it a persistent and pervasive weed. It is damaging for the simple reason that it takes over from native plants.
