The difference is that there was no Muslim slavery. One of the beautiful things about Islam is that it came at a time when slavery was common and slaves were thought to be lesser people and treated like animals, and Islam taught people that slaves shouldn't be mistreated. There are examlples of many Muslims who bought slaves from slavers just to set them free. An example of a slave who was given such great respect and rewards in this life and the hereafter insha'Allah is Hazrat Bilal (radi-Allahu-anhu). Reading about this great Sahaba will tell you that Islam came to end slavery, not to indulge in it.
