The difference between them is that Islam is a religion per Qur'an revelation by God to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the angel Gabriel (or Jibril). However, jihad is the struggle ; practiced by Muslims and one Muslims; to get life requirements, raise up families, practice good morals and religion teachings as well as struggle to defend lands, homes, families, and religion against military attacks. It is important to note, first that Islam is a religion, but Islamism is something else. It is a political ideology whose goal is to bring the religious tenets of Islam into the daily functioning of a government and its laws. Islamism is a modern movement whose roots began contemporaneously with the rise of Salafism in the late 1800s and early 1900s in Egypt. Islamism is not by nature violent or expansive. Many Islamist movements have concrete nationalistic goals such as the Islamists in power in Turkey.
Similarly, jihad is a tenet of Islam, but jihadism is a political ideology. Jihadism holds that the only way to establish Shari'a-compliant Islamic States is through violent acts of warfare. Although jihadism is a political ideology, as opposed to a religious tenet of Islam, it is strongly informed by Islamic religious doctrines on jihad. The rise of jihadism directly promotes violence.
Differences Discussion
The end-goal of Islamism and Jihadism are the creation of Shari'a Compliant state, but the organizations supporting one method or the other may differ in terms of methods. The first and most major difference is actually very similar to the division between Socialists and Communists. Islamists, like Socialists, hold that the method of obtaining power and moving in the proper direction can be achieved through either violent or peaceful means. Islamists have run in national elections in numerous countries (Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia) without any violent incidents starting in their camp (Secularists in those countries have often repressed or attacked peaceful Islamists in order to preserve religious liberties against possible incursions by Islamists).
Conversely, there have also been a number of Islamist movements that were inherently violent in their accession to power, such as the Taliban in Afghanistan or al-Shabaab in Somalia. Jihadist movements are similar to these more violent Islamists, holding similar to Communists vis-Ã -vis Socialists, that Islam can only be established as the regional government through violence and revolution. The most-talked-about Jihadist movement currently is Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
Another difference is that Islamists range on a scale of "how Islamic" the Islamic State they wish to create must be, with rigid views on one end of the scale and very moderate views on the other. Jihadists are ideological purists who have a necessarily rigid view of how Law and Order should be administrated.
