A carburetor has tubes or "barrels" to allow air through and a butterfly valve to control the amount of air. As air is allowed through, a "jet" allows a controlled amount of fuel into the air stream. Properly controlling the amount of fuel allowed into the stream of air is perhaps the most difficult part of setting up a carburetor.
More air into the engines means that an engine can operate at a higher RPM.
To allow more air/fuel mixture through (into the combustion chambers), carburetor manufacturers have designed 2 and 4 barrel carburetors. Typically 4 barrel carburetors are "progressive linkage", meaning that the second two barrels do not open until you have your "foot into it" and the engine RPM's are up. T
It depends on the year of the engine. here are some examples. Year . 2bbl 301s had 130 hp, 4bbl 301 had 150
The base 305 had a 4bbl carburetor
Put a 4bbl carb and intake on it. If I remember they came with 2bbl
With a 2bbl carb. 195 HP With a 4bbl carb. 220 HP.
2 barrel
The 1996 4.3L engine doesn't have a carburetor, it is fuel injected.
It will work, but you would need a 4bbl intake or an adapter plate to fit the 4bbl carb on a 2bbl intake. There are many 4bbl intakes for small block Chevy's available in the aftermarket, or even the junkyard. I would recommend just getting a different intake instead of adding an adapter plate due to possible clearance issues between the hood and the air cleaner. yes it dousent matter what the carb sizes are when it comes to the same size of motor for space the only problem you should have is that the headers may need to be replaced for spaceing but for other jobs like this a 302 block is the exact same size as a 400 block jsut bored out alot more
First, what kind of carb. 2bbl.......4bbl....make, model, holley, roch. , edel., Is the engine cam'ed ? Stock ? Want more info? Get back to me on my message board.
Low compression, 2bbl carb = 230 hp High compression, 4bbl carb = 290 hp 1964 442 330 engine = 310 hp
