Homicide is the killing of one person.

Genocide is the killing of an entire group of people. (like when the Nazis tried to kill all the Jews during WWII. That was genocide.)

It determines whether the United Nations can use force to stop it.

To assassinate means to murder a prominent individual. Genocide means to kill a whole group of people, for instance when the Nazis tried to exterminate Jews.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • assassination is deliberately killing someone (i.e. first degree murder), typically for political purposes
  • genocide is an attempt to kill all the people of a specific group (e.g. Jews, native people, a political party, mentally ill, the defeated people following war)
