A professional publication is

  • aimed at a specific audience, often in business and industry
  • deals with current news, issues and trends
  • uses specialized language
  • usually issued on a weekly or monthly basis.

Common-sense would say a mass-marketed publication is

  • aimed at everyone
  • deals with current news, issues and trends that are of interest to mass market
  • uses language everyone can understand and
  • may be issued daily, weekly, monthly

Another criteria I've come across is the peer editing required in professional journals.
