- deals with current news, issues and trends
- uses specialized language
- usually issued on a weekly or monthly basis.
Common-sense would say a mass-marketed publication is
- aimed at everyone
- deals with current news, issues and trends that are of interest to mass market
- uses language everyone can understand and
- may be issued daily, weekly, monthly
Another criteria I've come across is the peer editing required in professional journals.
