Although is a conjunction used to join two clauses in the same sentence. "The general proclaimed a victory although his army had been destroyed and he was in flight." However is used at the commencement of a new sentence. "The general proclaimed a victory. However, his army had been destroyed and he was in flight."

This is not the same as the use of however which has nothing to do with although "The general will proclaim a victory however many soldiers die under his command."
