Introduction Object linking and embedding are method for data integration among different types of software. It is also known as (OLE)

It is a major way to extend the capability of an application.

Take Office as an example, its main usage is to integrate data from multiple application into compound document.

Example

Excel spreadsheet embedded or linked to PowerPoint presentation

In this case, Excel is the OLE server; PowerPoint is the OLE client; Spreadsheet is the OLE object

Object Linking

Create a linked object that links to an actual object, created by another application;

The Actual object is not saved inside the document;

Linked object contains only the representation and access method of the actual object;

Updates of the actual object by the original software will apply automatically in the linked object;

If, the actual object is deleted/moved: cannot be accessed through linked object, error message prompted.

Object Embedding

Copying an object to the destination;

The copy of the object (embedded object) is stored in the document;

Even if the original object modified/moved/deleted: will not affect the embedded object;

Differences between Objecting Linking and Object Embedding

File size: embedding much larger; linking no significant increase;

Therefore, linking is often used to insert large objects (video clips and complicated vector graphics)

Object Linking refers to the process in which you link and object in your program.

Object embedding on the other hand is when you embed (insert) and object in your program. With object linking, only a link is stored in the document. This means that any changes to the object are automatically reflected in all documents that link to the object. Typically you will link to an object when the object is shared amongst several documents and you wish all documents to use the latest version of the object. You might also use object linking when a document uses the same object several times, thus reducing the physical size of the document accordingly.

With object embedding, the object is copied into the document, making it completely independent of the original object. Any changes made to the object within one document does not affect any of the others.
