Fax (short for facsimile) is a voice technology based on telegraphy that allows the electronic transfer of images over the telephone network. Patented by Alexander Bain in 1843, fax technology did not gain widespread popularity until the 1970s, when the first affordable "fax machines" became available.

RightFax is a fax server product owned by OpenText Corporation that allows users to route and manage large volumes of faxed information securely. As fax technology has improved, RightFax now enables fax over IP (FoIP) via an internet connector, allowing RightFax users to exchange data in the cloud and bypass the telephone network altogether.
