The two earthquakes occurred due to differing types of fault movement (thrust faulting in the Chilean quake vs strike slip faulting in the Haitian quake) and at two differing types of plate boundaries. In the case of the Chilean earthquake, this was at a convergent boundary where the Nazca oceanic plate is being subducted under the continental South American plate as opposed to the Haitian earthquake which occurred at a transform boundary between the Caribbean and North American plates which are both moving east but at differing speeds.

The Haitian earthquake was also of lower magnitude (magnitude 7.0) than the Chilean earthquake (magnitude 8.8) however it caused more damage and led to a much larger number of injuries and fatalities due to the poor construction techniques used in Haiti.

What is the difference between the Haiti earthquake and the Chile earthquake?

One difference is: By the end of the year, 80% of the damage was either fixed or replaced, and Kobe did not take any donations that were offered to them. Haiti received £4.6 billion and still there is rubble taking up 40% of the country.

Is the Haitian earthquake related to the one in Chile?

There is no obvious geological link between the two earthquakes as they had differing causal mechanisms, occurred on differing types of tectonic plate boundaries between two different pairs of tectonic plates. How were the Haitian and Chilean earthquakes similar?

There is no obvious similarity between the two earthquakes as they had differing causal mechanisms, occurred on differing types of tectonic plate boundaries between two different pairs of tectonic plates. Also the earthquakes caused a significantly different number of casualties and fatalities (approx 230,000 dead in Haiti vs. approx 800 in Chile). Please see the related links for more information about the two earthquakes.

At what type of boundary did the 1960 Chilean earthquake occur?

At a convergent boundary between oceanic and continental crust where subduction is occurring.

What is difference between the focus and the epicenter of an earthquake?

The difference between the epicentre and the focus of earthquakes is this:The focus of the earthquake is where the actual earthquake occurred and the epicentre is on the ground directly above the focus. The epicentre is used to say where the earthquake was in relation to places near where it occurred.Hope this helped :)
