Continuous light is just what the name implies, light that is on constantly. There are a few kinds of continuous light, tungsten, fluorescent, HMI and LED are the most common. It would take a pretty detailed conversation to explain lighting in detail but here's a short answer. What matters is the source of the light and how it is modified. A direct flash can be very hard but if it is bounced into an umbrella it becomes soft. A fluorescent light is soft by nature and can be diffused further. If you have the money to get the right lights, you can get great light from almost any light source. It all depends on what you want to accomplish. The clarity depends on the quality of the light you are using. If you state what you want to do then it is easier to give you advice on what kind of light to get.
