A Library is a place where one can search and access the required books, magazines etc and can read and use them for one's reference without paying any or full cost of the material, whereas at a bookstore one can not use any books or material without paying the charge of the material.

AdditionIt should be noted though that at certain bookstores, Barnes and Noble or Borders for instance, they actually do allow you to read the books and magazines there, however, the difference here would be drawn at the point that you cannot bring the literature from a bookstore home without paying the charge for the item.
