In the 1800s, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, cholera, and influenza were among the most common causes of death. These diseases spread rapidly in crowded urban areas with poor sanitation and limited medical treatments.
1. Tuberculosis: The bacteria that cause tuberculosis are called mycobacterium tuberculosis.2. Bubonic Plague: The bacteria that cause the plague are the yersinia pestis variety.3. Cholera: The bacteria that cause Cholera are the vibrio cholerae bacteria that contaminates food stuff and water.

Bacteria is the cause of many types of disease. Six of them are anthrax, botulism, cholera, meningitis, Legionnaires disease, and tuberculosis.
The majority of diseases included smallpox, influenza, typhoid, cholera, mumps, measles, malaria, whopping cough, bubonic plague, yellow fever, pneumonia, and dysentery.
Robert Koch discovered that different germs caused different diseases. He later identified the germs that caused anthrax, tuberculosis (TB) and cholera.

Not all of the bacteria species found in the world today are beneficial. Some like the Staphylococcus aureus are pathogenic in nature. They have caused diseases such as; pneumonia, gonorrhea, meningitis and cholera.
During Dickens's time, the three major diseases were cholera, typhoid fever, and tuberculosis. These diseases were widespread and were major public health concerns in Victorian England. Dickens himself witnessed the impact of these diseases on society and incorporated them into his writings.
