Several terms may be used to describe the 'end of a clicky pen', also called a retractable (ball-point) pen, when referring to the part you push to extend or retract the ball-point.

Generally speaking, though, this part of the pen is technically described as the 'button', or the 'push-button'.

The button is connected to the 'button spring', and depressing the button causes the button spring to contract, forcing the (ball-point) tip of the pen's reservoir (of ink) to extend from the tip of the pen case and lock in place.

This makes it possible to use the pen for writing: the button stays depressed while the mechanism is locked so that the point of the pen remains extended.

A second push to the button causes the button to rise, releasing the button spring, which allows the reservoir to retract into the pen case so that the pen may be safely stored without any leakage of ink or damage to the ball-point.
