There is a whole list of testing procedures but you need a DRBII scan tool to do the tests.
SYMPTOM
P1762-GOVERNOR PRESSURE SENSOR OFFSET VOLTS TOO LOW OR HIGH
WHEN MONITORED
Continuously with the key ON and the engine running.
SET CONDITION
This code will set if the governor pressure is out of range in park or neutral for 1.3 seconds for three consecutive bad 3.0 second tests and sump temperature > 10 C (50 F) and <
127 C (260 F) are required to set the code.
POSSIBLE CAUSES
Powertrain control module
Powertrain control module - 5 volt supply high
Powertrain control module - after 5 volt supply shorted to voltage
Powertrain control module - after 5 volt supply shorted to voltage in trans
Repair the 5 volt supply circuit and check the PCM
Replace the trans solenoid assembly and check the PCM
Intermittent condition
Powertrain control module - internal fault
5 volt supply circuit open
Check for other trans DTC's
Governor pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to voltage inside trans
Check trans fluid level and condition
Governor pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to voltage
Park neutral DTC present
5 volt supply circuit shorted to ground
Governor pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to 5 volt supply circuit
Governor pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to 5 volt supply circuit inside trans
Governor pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to ground
5 volt supply circuit shorted to sensor ground
Governor pressure sensor signal circuit open inside trans
Governor pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to sensor ground
GOV pressure sensor signal circuit open
Governor pressure solenoid
Governor pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to ground inside trans
Powertrain control module - 5 volt supply circuit low
Sensor ground circuit open
Transmission line pressure low
Governor pressure sensor signal circuit shorted to sensor ground inside trans
5 volt supply circuit open inside trans
5 volt supply circuit shorted to ground inside trans
5 volt supply circuit shorted to sensor ground inside trans

That means you go to your local Dodge dealer, grab the Governor Pressure Solenoid, Transducer, 2 gallons of Mopar ATF, a filter, and gasket and change them out. It takes about 1 hour total to do the job in your driveway.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE VALVE BODY
Once the pan is dropped and the filter is removed you will notice the wiring laced threw-out the valve body. These lead to your GPS and Transducer solenoid. I didn't want to go the dealer route and pay big bucks for the Governor Pressure sensor and Governor Pressure solenoid. With a little online searching I found Transtar Industries, Inc. at www.transtarindustries.com Part numbers where 20A-120A for the sensor and 5A-303 for the solenoid. The prices quoted me were just over $120 for both parts. This was $100s better than what the dealer quoted me. This was for a 1997 46RE transmission. Also applies to the 47RE trans.

P1762-GOVERNOR PRESSURE SENSOR OFFSET VOLTS TOO LOW OR HIGH
Trouble code P1762 means: Governor pressure sensor offset improper voltage
Trouble code P1762 means: Governor pressure sensor offset improper voltage Replace the sensor
The code p1762 in a Grand Cherokee shows possible transmission problems. Low transmission fluid could be the cause. Make sure that the fluid is full then check again.
Tansmission O/D band failure.
55 code is not an error code, it signals end of codes. If no other codes preceded it, you have no error codes.
Trouble code P0171 means: Fuel System Lean (Bank 1)
Error codes on a 1997 Mercury Villager can be found by connecting an OBDII code reader to the diagnostic port. The service manual has a full list of error codes and their causes.
P1762, governer pressure sensor offset volts too high or low. The sensor has most likely failed.. It is located on the valve body in the transmission,
