It is estimated that the world population will reach around 9.7 to 10.9 billion by 2050, according to the United Nations. This increase is largely driven by growth in developing countries, particularly in Africa and Asia. Efforts to address population growth and its impact on resources and the environment are important for sustainable development.

The projected global population for 2050 is expected to be approximately 9.5 billion people according to the United State Census Bureau. In contrast, the United Nations has a "low" population projection for the year 2050 according to a recent article posted by the Worldwatch Institute which is 9.2 billion people. Some others say it could be as high as 10 billion people, however.

In 2006, the United Nations stated that the rate of population growth is diminishing due to the demographic transition. If this trend continues, the rate of growth may diminish to zero, concurrent with a world population plateau of 9.2 billion, in 2050. However, this is only one of many estimates published by the UN. In 2009, UN projections for 2050 range from about 8 billion to 10.5 billion.
