That means the oil is 15 weight when cold and 40 weight when hot. The higher the number the thicker the oil.
15w means they are the viscosity (flow) when the oil is cold, the -30 and -40 is the viscosity of the oil when hot. Therefore the 15w-30 being the lower Viscosity means it will flow fast then the 15w-40 when the oil is hot.

15w 40 is recommended for this size engine. 10w 40 will suffice if no 15w is available.
15w 40 engine oil can be used for all temperatures down to -15 deg centergrade !

If it is a diesel then it holds 4 quarts. I would recommend you use any of these major brands. Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w-40 weight, Shell Rotella T 15W-40, or Chevron Delo 400LE 15W-40 weight.
This should be fine, although in very cold weather you might have a little more difficulty starting the engine because 15W 40 oil is thicker than 10W 40.

10w/40 or 15w/40 should do the trick.
You should always use the same oil when topping off. Some different WT oils react and cause solids to form when mixed and will damage the engine.
