There are several Families of dragonflies. If you are looking for the commonly used general classification name for them, the Order name for dragonflies and damselflies is Odonata. The Suborder for dragonflies is Anisoptera. Odonata Central (http://www.odonatacentral.org) has lots of photos and classification information if you are looking for the Family name for a particular type of dragonfly.

Dragonflies do not belong to a single family. All belong to the suborder Anisoptera, but they are separated into different families, such as Libellulidae (common skimmers/perchers), Aeshnidae (darners/hawkers), Gomphidae (clubtails), Petaluridae (petaltails) and Corduliidae(emeralds).

The dragonfly looks like a dragon, in the sense that it flies with wings in the shade of green, and the entire body of the dragonfly gives the illusion of "scales" because of its green and blue color.
