Prior to the Communist takeover of Russia the city was called Tsaritsyn (Yellow Water) however when the communist took over Russia they changed the name as Tsaritsyn sounded similar to the Russian word for a supporter of the Czar.
In 1925 the communists gave the city the name Stalingrad(Steel City) in an unsubtle salute to Joseph Stalin. However by 1961 Joseph Stalin had beceom an unpopular figure in the Soviet Union so the citys name was again changed to Volgograd after the Volga river that runs through it.
