Backspace is the keyboard key that originally pushed the typewriter carriage one position backwards, and in modern computer displays moves the cursor one position backwards, deletes the preceding character, and shifts back the text after it by one position. Backspace is when you subtract a letter, say you are typing Hello but you spell it Helo. The backspace would be in a process like this. Hel/ He/Hello, you get rid of the o then type another lo by using backspace.

Wow. Okay I am just saying that is a pretty stupid but, the BACKSPACE button on the keyboard erases any letters/words you didn't mean to put.
