Someone should probably check me on this, but I believe the its a system that contains fuel vapors on any car, not just your Nissan, and prevents them from escaping the fuel system and (possibly) igniting. According to about.com, the vapors are contained in a carbon filled canister when the car is off, and routed to the engine when it is on. == pretty much right== The idea is to keep the hydrocarbons in the fuel from entering the atmosphere. Todays car's will release more hydrocarbons in to the atmosphere by leaving the fuel cap off than what comes out the tailpipe.
